News Analysis in Tobacco Control
Dear Colleagues
This note is to encourage you to contribute to the News Analysis section of the journal Tobacco Control (TC).
TC's News Analysis section tends to give priority to stories from countries with fewer resources. Articles appearing there can be useful resources to copy and show to politicians, journalists and others you may want to inform about some aspect of tobacco control.
TC is the only specialist journal covering all aspects of tobacco control policy and research. It is published every three months by the British Medical Journal group, and is available both in printed form and online at
http://tc.bmjjournals.com/ (please note: access from most low-income countries is free).
The editor of the News Analysis section, David Simpson, Director of the International Agency on Tobacco and Health, is happy to consider any story that you think would make a useful contribution. In particular, he is always keen to hear about new ways that tobacco companies try to get children and other people hooked on smoking, get round tobacco control policy, or pretend they have changed and are now responsible companies in order to avoid measures being taken that might reduce their sales. However, success stories are equally welcome, as are new ideas for educating people about tobacco, making public places smoke-free, and almost any and every other tobacco-related topic - you can get a better idea by taking a look back issues for some of the stories that have appeared in the News Analysis section.
All you have to do is to let David know the outline of your idea (d.simpson@iath.org
or fax (London - +44 20 7387 9841), and if it looks suitable, you can discuss whether you send him the relevant information for him to write the article, or whether you draft it yourself. Either way, your name can appear as an author of the article, or if you wish to remain anonymous, your anonymity can be guaranteed. Pictures are always welcome, and the News Analysis section often includes items that consist only of a picture and caption. Please check with David before sending him any large picture files by e-mail.
Please note that this section of TC deals with news and comment, and not primarily with research and other more academic items: these are best submitted to the overall editor of the journal, Simon Chapman to be considered for other sections (see instructions to authors on the Tobacco Control website,
http://tc.bmjjournals.com/misc/ifora.shtml).
